Fedora 44 KDE users lose the Plasma X11 session in the 6.8 update after FESCo votes against a revert; Artix 2026.11 makes Wayland its Plasma default

Plasma 6.8 retires X11 sessions upstream; Fedora's steering committee rejected a ticket asking to revert the update on Fedora 44 and 45, and Artix Linux made Wayland its Plasma default.

Overview

KDE’s Plasma 6.8 no longer starts X11 sessions, and Fedora 44 KDE Plasma Desktop users received that change as an update. LWN.net reports that the removal surprised a number of Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop users, and that the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo) has voted against a request to revert the update for Fedora 44 and the just-released Fedora 45. Separately, Linuxiac reports that Artix Linux 2026.11 makes Wayland the default for KDE Plasma.

What upstream changed

The Plasma 6.8 announcement, dated Wednesday, 14 October 2026, says that “support for starting X11 sessions in Plasma is being retired, in conjunction with full adoption of the newer Wayland system.” It adds that “The small number of individual apps that still require X11 will continue to work via the “XWayland” compatibility layer” and that “KDE applications will continue to support X11 for the foreseeable future.” According to LWN.net, the KDE Project announced in 2025 that Plasma 6.7 would be the last version supporting X11 sessions.

How it reached Fedora 44

A Fedora Discussion user posting as farchord, who described release-testing Plasma 6.8.0, wrote in a thread dated 10 October that, because a final freeze was in effect, the new releases could not go into Fedora 44 and 45 until the freeze was over and Fedora 45 was released. The post says a copr (a community-built package repository) would carry Plasma 6.8.0 in the meantime.

Posts in a second Fedora Discussion thread, started on 1 November, show the effect on users. A Fedora 44 KDE Plasma Desktop Edition user, yitin, wrote: “I just did an update and it’s gone.” Another participant, ssynxx, replied that KDE removed the X11 session upstream and that “Plasma 6.7 was the last version with an X11 session.”

In a third thread on 2 November, user tootea wrote that the 6.8 update “obsoletes the -x11 variants of kwin and plasma” and asked whether the packages had to be obsoleted on Fedora 44. User ngompa answered that without the obsoletes the packages “would have been broken due to a mismatch between those packages being on 6.7 and the rest of the stack being 6.8 with all the X11 session support code being deleted.” ngompa added: “Plasma X11 has also been unsupported since Fedora 40 when Plasma 6 was introduced.”

The FESCo ticket

On 2 November, a user listed as sergiomb opened FESCo ticket 3707, titled “plasma-workspace-x11 was removed from F44 and F45 which is unacceptable in stable branch updates”. The ticket body says: “I ask Fesco to revert these updates on F44 and F45”. The same user later quoted Fedora’s Updates Policy: “Updates should aim to fix bugs, and not introduce features, particularly when those features would materially affect the user or developer experience.”

A commenter named siosm replied that the KDE SIG has an update exception for keeping the KDE stack current, and wrote: “Keeping Fedora 44 on Plasma 6.7 is not realistic.” The comment continued: “If you want to keep X11 support in Fedora, you should take over maintenance of the components dropped by upstream in the Plasma 6.8 release. The other option is to keep building the KDE Plasma 6.7 packages in a COPR.” Commenters ngompa and salimma also posted “-1”.

The ticket was closed on 3 November with the label Status/Rejected. A comment by zbyszek says the matter was discussed at that day’s meeting and records the result as “Rejected”. A later comment by kevin said: “The older version is going out of support by upstream and downstream cannot commit to maintaining it for the rest of the fedora release cycle on their own.”

Fedora 45 and Artix

Fedora Magazine’s post on Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop 45, dated 3 November, says “KDE Plasma 6.8 was released on KDE’s 30 year anniversary and we are proud to have it be the star of Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition 45.” Its lists of new and updated features do not mention the X11 session.

On 5 November, Linuxiac reported that Artix Linux 2026.11 makes Wayland the default for KDE Plasma. It says the distribution updated configurations for its Plasma and Community-Qt editions, and that Wayland support “remains limited to Plasma for now”, with other desktop environments at various stages of implementation.

What We Don’t Know

  • The ticket records the FESCo outcome as “Rejected”; the sources reviewed do not give a detailed account of the discussion at the meeting.
  • The sources do not say how many Fedora 44 users were affected.
  • The sources do not say whether anyone has taken up the maintenance of X11 session components that siosm described.
