Overview

Anthropic’s Claude Platform release notes list an entry dated October 21, 2026 saying the company has “released API version 2026-10-21” and new versions of its client SDKs and the ant CLI that send that version by default. Anthropic’s migration guide describes the upgrade from API version 2023-06-01 and lists the breaking changes. This article summarizes what those Anthropic documents say; they are the vendor’s own statements, and the Herald has not tested the behavior.

What the documents list

New SDK and CLI versions

Per the release notes, the SDK versions that send 2026-10-21 by default are Python SDK 2.0.0, TypeScript SDK 1.0.0, C# SDK 13.0.0, Go SDK 2.0.0, Java SDK 3.0.0, PHP SDK 1.0.0, Ruby SDK 2.0.0 and ant CLI 2.0.0. The GitHub release page for the Python SDK shows a v2.0.0 release dated 21 Oct and lists one breaking change: “add support for new API version 2026-10-21”.

The release notes also say the new SDK and CLI versions “have breaking changes that don’t depend on the API version” and are “licensed under Apache 2.0 instead of the MIT License”. The migration guide adds that earlier versions remain under the MIT License and that no code changes are needed for the license change.

Messages API changes

The migration guide lists three Messages API changes that apply to requests made with 2026-10-21, including token counting and requests in a Message Batch:

  • A request that places a document block directly in an assistant message returns a 400 error. The guide says to send documents in user messages instead, and that a document nested inside another block, such as a web fetch tool result that Claude returned, is still accepted.
  • A request that sends a text block with a non-empty citations array in a user message returns a 400 error, including inside search_result blocks. Citations on text blocks in assistant messages are still accepted, as is the "citations": {"enabled": true} setting on documents and search results.
  • The temperature, top_p and top_k parameters are removed. According to the guide, a request that sends any of them returns a 400 error “even at the parameter’s default value”.

On sampling, the guide says a request without those parameters samples with their defaults, including a temperature of 1.0. It says models that already accept only the defaults, “such as Claude 4.7 and later models”, sample as before, while on models that accept other values, “such as Claude Sonnet 4.6”, a request that lowered temperature for more consistent output loses that effect. The guide says no other setting replaces it and that a request relying on a non-default value can stop sending the parameter or stay on 2023-06-01.

Admin API and Analytics API renames

According to the versions page, the Admin API no longer returns roles on RBAC groups (use role_ids), group_id on RBAC group members (use rbac_group_id), name on RBAC roles (use display_name), group_type on rate-limit entries (use group.type) or workspace_id on API keys (use scope.workspace_id). In the Claude Enterprise Analytics API, per-user usage and cost reports no longer have actor.email (use actor.email_address), and activity summaries no longer have summaries (use data).

SDK-specific changes

The migration guide lists several SDK and CLI changes beyond the API version. Among them:

  • MessageParam is split into UserMessageParam, AssistantMessageParam and SystemMessageParam, and BetaMessageParam is split the same way. The guide says the requests the SDK sends have the same fields and values as before.
  • The SDK and the CLI send the API key as Authorization: Bearer <key> instead of in the X-Api-Key header. The guide tells readers to change any proxy or gateway that reads or sets X-Api-Key, and says the Claude API accepts a key in either header.
  • The legacy Text Completions API is removed from the TypeScript, Go, Java and Ruby SDKs and from the CLI.
  • Client-side compaction in the tool runner is removed from the TypeScript and Ruby SDKs in favor of server-side compaction.
  • For Go, the SDK module path becomes github.com/anthropics/anthropic-sdk-go/v2, and the CLI’s becomes github.com/anthropics/anthropic-cli/v2.

Availability

The versions page says 2026-10-21 is available on the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed), Microsoft Foundry and Claude Models on Google Cloud (Google managed). On Amazon Bedrock, it says, the version is available for Claude 4.7 and later models; the migration guide tells readers calling older models on Bedrock to stay on the SDK version they use today.

What the documents do not say

The pages the Herald read, as of October 31, 2026, do not give a date after which 2023-06-01 stops working. The versions page says that for any given API version Anthropic preserves existing input parameters and existing output parameters. Developers who use an SDK receive the new version when they upgrade to the new major release; the guide says those who call the API without an SDK set the anthropic-version header to 2026-10-21.
