NVIDIA Dynamo 1.6.0 Adds Pluggable Router Flow Control and LPX Kubernetes Components, and Deprecates the Router's Scoring Flags

Dynamo v1.6.0, published October 22, adds request-classifier plugins to its router, LPU-backed LPX components for Kubernetes, and snapshot-backed engine failover, and moves to SGLang v0.5.21 and vLLM v0.31.0.

Overview

Dynamo v1.6.0, the open-source distributed inference platform, was published on October 22. According to the v1.6.0 release notes, it is the 19th feature release and spans 654 merged PRs from 148 contributors. The notes open with pluggable flow control in Dynamo Router, LPU-backed inference on Kubernetes, and snapshot-backed engine failover.

The Herald’s earlier coverage of the serving stack includes llm-d 1.0.0. This briefing covers a different project.

What Changed

Router. Per the release notes, a request-classifier hook lets a plugin defer a request, override validated scheduling inputs, or suggest a worker without overriding explicit worker pins. Every request now flows through the policy queue, which orders requests by deadline. ThunderAgent ships as a builtin plugin. Dynamo Frontend, the standalone selection service and the Gateway API endpoint picker (EPP) now share one worker-selection core, and scoring knobs move into --router-policy-config. An opt-in session prefix index tracks session-to-block lineage for agentic workloads.

Frontend. The release notes list opt-in V2 tool and reasoning parsers for eight model families, selected with DYN_PARSER_VERSION. They also list an OpenAI-compatible /v1/rerank endpoint for SGLang cross-encoder models, a root-level thinking_token_budget field that caps reasoning tokens on SGLang and vLLM, and mutual TLS support on the Frontend HTTP server.

Kubernetes. According to the release notes, LPX components bring LPU-backed inference to DynamoGraphDeployments. Multinode worker, prefill and decode components can take separate leader and worker pod templates, and the Operator injects portable DYNAMO_RANK and DYNAMO_LEADER_ADDRESS variables. Dynamo Snapshot backs active and standby engine failover for SGLang and vLLM, and the GPU Memory Service adds Intel XPU support.

Planner. Dynamo Planner can reconfigure endpoint floors and GPU budget bounds at runtime through /v1/min-endpoints, according to the notes. An experimental Planner Gym compares Planner, KEDA-style, reactive and static autoscaling policies against replayed or live traffic.

Engine Versions

The v1.6.0 dependency table pins SGLang v0.5.21, TensorRT-LLM v1.3.0rc29 and vLLM v0.31.0. The v1.5.1 notes list SGLang v0.5.18, TensorRT-LLM v1.3.0rc25 and vLLM v0.28.0. The v1.6.0 notes also say that the TensorRT-LLM AutoDeploy backend was removed because TensorRT-LLM v1.3.0rc29 deleted it upstream with no replacement, leaving PyTorch as the only TensorRT-LLM backend.

Upgrade Notes

The v1.6.0 release notes carry a long Breaking Changes section with migration guidance. Items that affect Kubernetes and API users include the following, all per the release notes:

  • vLLM worker services are renamed from VllmWorker, VllmPrefillWorker and VllmDecodeWorker to worker, prefill and decode. Pod names, Kubernetes Service names and the dynamo_component metric label change with them.
  • The Dynamo Operator no longer adopts resources it does not own. A pre-existing object that shares a name with an Operator-managed child is not adopted, updated or deleted, and the deployment reports an ownership conflict instead.
  • Grove v0.1.0-alpha.14 is required for new multinode deployments created by Dynamo Operator v1.6.0.
  • Structural tags are on by default for supported parsers, so valid tool schemas that use constructs the grammar backend rejects, such as regex lookahead, can fail requests. Setting DYN_ENABLE_STRUCTURAL_TAG=false restores the previous behavior.
  • Non-streaming /v1/responses no longer infers tool calls from assistant text, so a backend tool-call parser is needed for structured calls.
  • The Router scoring and selection flags are deprecated in favor of --router-policy-config and are slated for removal in Dynamo v1.7.0. Parameters in the policy YAML override the deprecated flags and environment variables.
  • Dynamo Planner caps throughput scaling at 8 replicas per decision per component.

Known Issues

The notes list several open problems. On SGLang, a request whose stop_token_ids includes an ID at or above the model’s vocabulary size can crash the scheduler when any request in the batch sets min_tokens, and no workaround is available yet. On vLLM, a request without max_tokens can generate up to the full remaining context window when the model sets no default output length; the suggested workaround is to set max_tokens on every request. The release notes also report that non-streaming /v1/messages requests on TensorRT-LLM whose prompt exceeds the engine’s max_num_tokens return HTTP 500 instead of HTTP 400.

What We Don’t Know

The release notes are the only description of the changes cited here, and they come from the project itself. This briefing does not evaluate how the new features behave in production.
