What We Know
- Timing. The PHP.net notice gives the schedule as 14:00 UTC on 21 October 2026. It adds that the team reserves “the right to release earlier should details of either vulnerability become public, or should evidence of active exploitation appear in the wild.”
- Severity. Two vulnerabilities are involved, and the notice rates both at CVSS v4.0 9.2, which it labels critical.
- Disclosure plan. The notice says that “Full details, affected versions, and the fixed versions will be published with the release.”
- Wider attention. LWN.net picked up the notice on October 20 in a post by corbet titled “Critical PHP security update coming,” writing that “Anybody running a PHP site probably needs to be prepared for this one.”
Context
The PHP.net homepage lists the most recent stable releases as 8.5.11, 8.4.26, 8.3.35 and 8.2.34. Its entries for 8.4.26 and 8.2.34 are dated 24 Sep 2026 and state “This is a security release.” The php-src release page for 8.5.11 describes that version as a security release as well, and its timestamp is 2026-09-24T13:57:18Z.
Separately, the homepage shows that PHP 8.6.0 RC3 was announced on 08 Oct 2026 as a test version, with the warning “Please DO NOT use this version in production, it is an early test version.” The next release candidate, RC4, is planned for 22 October 2026.
What We Don’t Know
- The names of the two vulnerabilities, their CVE identifiers and the affected components have not been published; the notice defers them to the release itself.
- Which release branches will receive fixes is not stated. The notice says only that the fixed versions will be published with the release.
- Whether the release will ship earlier than scheduled depends on whether details leak or exploitation appears, per the conditions in the notice.
- When this article was prepared, the PHP.net releases page did not yet list a 21 October release, so the contents of the fix are not yet public.
