Weaviate 1.40.1 and 1.38.21 Release Notes Cite Fixes for x/net CVE-2026-78663 and zlib CVE-2026-85091, While 1.39.12 Cites Only the x/net Fix
Weaviate published 1.38.21, 1.39.12 and 1.40.1 on October 12 and 13; the notes cite two CVE fixes, list no breaking changes or features, and do not describe the CVEs.
Overview
The open-source vector database Weaviate published three patch releases across two days. The release pages for v1.38.21 and v1.39.12 carry October 12 timestamps of 17:42 UTC and 17:50 UTC, and the page for v1.40.1 carries 06:35 UTC on October 13. Each set of notes lists “none” under both “Breaking Changes” and “New Features”. Two of them cite a fix for a zlib vulnerability, and all three cite an update to golang.org/x/net.
What the Release Notes Say
The three notes do not carry identical security items.
- v1.40.1: The release notes include “Fix zlib to a version unaffected by CVE-2026-85091” and “Update golang.org/x/net to fix CVE-2026-78663 etc”.
- v1.38.21: The release notes list the same two lines, with the same wording.
- v1.39.12: The release notes list five fixes, including “Update golang.org/x/net to fix CVE-2026-78663 etc”, and do not mention zlib.
The zlib item for the 1.39 line appears instead in the earlier v1.39.11 notes, whose page carries an October 9 timestamp of 15:44 UTC. Those notes word it as “security: pin zlib to a version not affected by CVE-2026-85091”. According to the two sets of notes, the zlib change therefore reached the 1.39 line three days before the x/net update. The notes do not say how the 1.39.12 build relates to the 1.39.11 change beyond the sequence of releases.
The notes for all three versions give only the CVE identifiers and a one-line description of each change. They do not state a severity rating, the affected code path, or whether Weaviate was exploitable through either dependency. The x/net line ends in “etc”, and the notes do not say which other advisories, if any, that covers.
Other Fixes in the Same Releases
The patch releases also carry non-security changes, and these differ by version.
- The v1.40.1 and v1.38.21 notes both list “queue: replay a failed queue batch on the queue’s next turn instead of blocking the workers”.
- All three notes list “fix(schema): never drop a live class that differs from an orphan only by case” and “perf: improve reindex vector dimensions at startup”.
- Only the v1.40.1 notes list “Return 500, not ‘already exists’, when checking an object ID fails”.
The v1.39.12 notes also list two test-related items, “queue: fix flaky tests that race the running scheduler” and “test(concurrency): count only the goroutines a budget test starts”.
Context
The 1.40 line began with v1.40.0, whose page carries an October 7 timestamp of 06:58 UTC. Weaviate’s 1.38 line was previously reported on this site when its HFresh disk-based index reached general availability.
What We Don’t Know
- Whether the two CVEs were exploitable against Weaviate deployments; the release notes do not say.
- What other advisories the “etc” in the x/net line covers.
- Whether Weaviate has published a separate security advisory; none is cited in the release notes read for this article.
- Whether further patch releases follow. This article reflects the release pages as read on October 13, 2026.
