GitLab 19.4.2, 19.3.4 and 19.2.8 Fix CVE-2026-97229, a CVSS 10.0 Code-Execution Flaw in the CI/CD Regular Expression Compiler

GitLab's October 12 critical patch release fixes CVE-2026-97229, rated CVSS 10.0, which GitLab says could let an unauthenticated user run code via a crafted CI/CD regular expression.

Overview

GitLab says it released versions 19.4.2, 19.3.4 and 19.2.8 of GitLab Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE) on October 12, 2026, in a critical patch release. The headline fix is CVE-2026-97229, an integer overflow issue in the CI/CD Regular Expression Compiler that the advisory rates CVSS 10.0. BleepingComputer reported the same day that GitLab urged users to patch immediately.

What We Know

  • The flaw. GitLab’s advisory says it “could have allowed an unauthenticated user to execute arbitrary code on the GitLab server via a specially crafted regular expression in a CI/CD configuration, due to insufficient regular expression validation.” The advisory prefaces this with “under certain conditions” and, in the entry for this CVE, does not say what those conditions are. BleepingComputer describes the component as one that “parses, compiles, and evaluates regular expressions in projects’ pipeline configuration files.”
  • Severity. GitLab lists CVSS 10.0 with the vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, and its summary table marks the issue Critical.
  • Affected and fixed versions. The advisory gives the impacted range as GitLab CE/EE “all versions from 19.2 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.4, and 19.4 before 19.4.2.” The fixed releases are therefore 19.2.8, 19.3.4 and 19.4.2.
  • Hosted and managed offerings. According to the advisory, “GitLab.com is already running the patched version” and “GitLab Dedicated customers do not need to take action.” GitLab strongly recommends that all self-managed installations upgrade immediately.
  • Credit. GitLab thanks joaxcar for reporting the issue through its HackerOne bug bounty program. BleepingComputer describes the reporter as a security researcher using the ‘joaxcar’ handle.
  • Exploitation. Neither the advisory nor the BleepingComputer report, both dated October 12, says CVE-2026-97229 has been exploited. The advisory states that the issues detailing each vulnerability are made public on GitLab’s issue tracker 90 days after the release in which they were patched.

The Rest of the Release

The advisory’s table of security fixes lists 24 entries by the severity labels shown there: one Critical, five High, 14 Medium and four Low, by this newsroom’s count of the rows. The five High-rated entries, each with its own CVSS 3.1 score, are:

  • CVE-2026-92883, cross-site scripting in syntax highlighting (CE/EE), CVSS 8.7 (vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N). Impacted: all versions from 19.1 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.4, and 19.4 before 19.4.2. Credit: a0xnirudh.
  • CVE-2026-16301, improper authorization in the downstream pipeline creation service (CE/EE), CVSS 8.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:N). GitLab says an authenticated user with the Developer role could run CI/CD pipelines on protected branches without authorization. Impacted: all versions from 18.7 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.4, and 19.4 before 19.4.2. Credit: sim4n6.
  • CVE-2026-14814, a permissive regular expression issue in repository file access (CE/EE), CVSS 8.2 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N). Impacted: all versions before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.4, and 19.4 before 19.4.2. Credit: ahacker1.
  • CVE-2026-81839, incorrect authorization in the scheduled pipeline execution policy (EE only), CVSS 7.7 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N). Impacted: all versions from 18.1 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.4, and 19.4 before 19.4.2. Credit: no_01.
  • CVE-2026-96893, improper neutralization of input used for LLM prompting in the GitLab Duo Agent Platform (EE only), CVSS 7.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N). Impacted: all versions from 19.1 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.4, and 19.4 before 19.4.2. GitLab says it was discovered internally by team member Mert Coskuner.

The advisory words one Medium entry differently from the rest. For CVE-2026-84284, an incorrect authorization issue in the GraphQL work item hierarchy (CVSS 5.3), the impacted range reads “all versions from 17.11 before 19.2.8, all 19.3 versions, and 19.4 before 19.4.2,” and the page does not name a 19.3 release containing that fix. The page does not explain the wording.

The bug-fix lists for all three releases each include two Ruby regexp patch entries (a program size patch and a repeat-range double-free patch, for Ruby 3.3 and 3.4). The advisory does not say whether these relate to CVE-2026-97229, so this article draws no connection.

GitLab also lists a known issue: 19.3.4 “has a bug that affects merge request pages when the Ona integration is enabled,” with a fix to follow in 19.3.5. The advisory adds that the patch includes database migrations, and that single-node instances will see downtime during the upgrade while multi-node instances can apply it without downtime using proper zero-downtime procedures.

Context

BleepingComputer describes CVE-2026-97229 as the latest in a string of GitLab vulnerabilities. It reports that last month GitLab addressed another maximum-severity flaw, CVE-2026-85706, which it says allows unauthenticated attackers to read sensitive data from vulnerable servers, and that CISA added that CVE to its exploited-vulnerabilities catalog one day later. That is a separate vulnerability from the one fixed on October 12. The Machine Herald also previously reported a separate critical GitLab fix, CVE-2026-90970, in the self-hosted AI Gateway, a different component.

What We Don’t Know

  • The “certain conditions” under which CVE-2026-97229 can be triggered are not described in either source.
  • Neither source reports whether exploitation attempts have been observed as of October 12.
  • It is not stated whether the Ruby regexp patches in the bug-fix lists are connected to this CVE.
  • GitLab says the issues detailing each vulnerability are made public on its issue tracker 90 days after the release in which they were patched, so further detail on this flaw may follow.
