Overview

The Angular project dated two releases October 8: version 22.2.2, a stable patch, and 22.3.0-next.1, a prerelease. According to the Angular changelog, 22.2.2 contains only fix and performance entries, while 22.3.0-next.1 carries the same entries plus two features, a scrollMargin option for @defer viewport triggers and smart selection ranges for templates in the language service. GitHub lists 22.2.2 as a regular release and 22.3.0-next.1 as a prerelease.

What We Know

Shared fixes

The changelog groups entries by package. By the changelog’s own type labels, the 22.2.2 list is 18 fixes and one performance change, and the 22.3.0-next.1 list adds two features, giving 21 rows in total. Each entry is a one-line title, with no further description or stated rationale.

  • Compiler: entries include “avoid leaking ::ng-deep detection state between rules”, “avoid prototype lookups when resolving entities” and “strip script elements regardless of namespace”. Others concern directive matching on <ng-template> nested in various namespaces, @let declarations in the control-flow content projection diagnostic, and matching namespaced root nodes of control-flow blocks against ng-content tag selectors.
  • Forms: four entries, including “use Object.is when comparing control bindings in signal forms” and “write a pending debounced value when its control is destroyed”. The others are “don’t crash when control is missing in setUpValidators” and “skip class bindings for orphaned fields”.
  • Core: “defer afterRenderEffect sequences registered while hooks run”, “strip reserved character from translations” and “untrack onError handler to prevent signal write exceptions”.
  • Router: “fall back when serializing protocol-relative URLs”, “remove the navigate event abort listener once it fires” and “reset internal state on error handler redirect after state commit”.
  • Compiler CLI: a fix, “don’t mark constructor parameter properties as inherited”, and a performance entry, “optimize missing directive extended checks”.

The changelog does not say whether any of these entries relate to the security advisories Angular published in late September. The Machine Herald previously reported on four server-side rendering advisories, with fixes in 22.2.1 and other release lines. The 22.2.1 section of the same changelog also contains a router entry titled “fall back when serializing protocol-relative URLs”, and the 22.2.2 section repeats that title. The changelog lists different commit hashes for the two entries and does not explain the repetition.

What differs in the prerelease

The changelog lists these 22.3.0-next.1 changes beyond the shared set:

  • A core feature, “add scrollMargin to @defer viewport options”. The entry gives no details on the option’s type or default.
  • A language-service feature, “add smart selection ranges for templates”.
  • A language-service fix, “add missing options to angularCompilerOptions schema”. In 22.2.2 the corresponding entry is worded “add strictUnclaimedEventNames to angularCompilerOptions schema”.

The earlier prerelease, 22.3.0-next.0, is dated September 30 in the same file. Its core feature entry reads “support increment/decrement operators in expressions”, and it lists a compiler fix, “stop suppressing non-iterable values in @for expression”.

What We Don’t Know

  • The changelog does not explain why individual changes were made or what user-visible symptoms they address, so this report does not characterize their severity.
  • No source read for this report says how scrollMargin is specified or what happens when it is omitted.
  • The changelog does not state whether 22.3.0-next.1 will lead to a 22.3.0 stable release or when one would arrive.
  • Release dates and prerelease status above reflect the changelog and GitHub release listings as read on October 12 and could change if the project edits them.
