OpenAI Gives Codex Reusable Cloud Environments, a Voice-Directed CLI and Offline Pull Request Reviews at DevDay
OpenAI's DevDay update to Codex adds saved cloud environments that persist across devices, a CLI with voice control and an /agents view, and automatic code reviews.
Overview
OpenAI introduced reusable cloud environments for its Codex coding agent, according to SiliconANGLE, giving developers a saved project configuration they can work from across devices. The update, announced at OpenAI’s DevDay on Tuesday, is one of several for Codex, alongside a refreshed Codex CLI and a new code review experience.
What We Know
Cloud environments
According to SiliconANGLE, the release targets the setup work that comes before an agent writes code: each new task starts from the saved configuration, with the project’s dependencies already installed. Codex reads the connected repository to see which software versions the project relies on and drafts the install script from what it finds.
TechCrunch reported that while Codex could already spin up cloud tasks to do work remotely, OpenAI is now making those environments more persistent and configurable, rather than treating each cloud task as an isolated remote sandbox. The environments are designed to help tasks start more quickly and give teams a shared workspace with approved settings and permissions, OpenAI said.
Per SiliconANGLE, once an environment is published, each task launched from it gets its own virtual machine and keeps working while the developer’s computer sleeps. Work not yet sent back to the repository stays with the task, so it can be reopened later from a phone or a browser. By default, a task’s state can be recovered for up to seven days after it was last used.
Sharing works through ChatGPT workspaces, SiliconANGLE reported: after an environment is shared, colleagues can run their own tasks from it, but access does not extend to anyone else’s tasks or to editing the setup, a permission that Enterprise administrators hand out separately.
For credentials, SiliconANGLE said the environments support standard environment variables plus a second type OpenAI calls network secrets. A program using a network secret sees only a placeholder, with a proxy inserting the real value as traffic heads to a domain on the allow list. Internet access defaults to a preset of common package registries, and developers can open it wider.
Availability
Access is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, and Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces also get it, according to SiliconANGLE. Plus accounts run on the smallest virtual machines, with half the processors and memory of the Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers.
CLI and code review
TechCrunch reported that the Codex CLI is getting an update that lets developers start and direct tasks using their voice. A new /agents view is meant to make it easier to delegate work and track multiple tasks at the same time. Other changes include improvements to editing prompts, resuming sessions and using worktrees, plus a “cleaner” terminal user interface designed to make longer sessions easier to read.
The same outlet said Codex can also be pulled into a new code review experience within the ChatGPT desktop app, where users can read summaries, explore code changes, or ask Codex about potential issues before sharing feedback on GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests. Automatic code reviews let Codex perform an initial review while users step away from their computers.
Security
OpenAI also rolled out Codex Security Cloud, which TechCrunch said lets developers scan entire GitHub repositories on demand or on a regular schedule, as well as whenever new commits arrive. Codex then investigates findings, removes duplicates and prepares fixes in the cloud. The tool set includes access to the models offered through OpenAI’s cybersecurity initiative Daybreak Blue, without requiring developers to submit a separate application.
What We Don’t Know
- SiliconANGLE noted that Codex cannot yet work with repositories on GitLab Inc. or on self-hosted GitHub Enterprise Server, and that computer and browser use are not supported in cloud environments. No date for either was given in the sources reviewed.
- The sources do not state when the CLI voice features and the ChatGPT desktop review experience reach all users.
Context
Codex has handled tasks in the cloud since it debuted as a research preview inside ChatGPT in May 2025, per SiliconANGLE. The Machine Herald has separately covered other Codex-related DevDay news, including the Pro 500 plan with an ultrafast Codex tier and the Agents API that opens the Codex agent harness to developers.
