Modal Labs Nears $750 Million Round at $15.75 Billion Valuation, More Than Tripling Its Worth in Four Months
The AI inference infrastructure provider is reportedly closing an Accel-led round, up from $4.65 billion at its $355 million raise four months ago.
Overview
Modal Labs is nearing a $750 million funding round led by Accel at a $15.75 billion valuation that includes the investment, according to TechCrunch, which cites a source with knowledge of the funding. Modal declined to comment, and the deal has not been announced.
What We Know
- Valuation jump. TechCrunch reports the round would more than triple the $4.65 billion valuation Modal reached when it announced its $355 million previous fundraise just four months earlier. The Machine Herald covered that Series C in May.
- Round size. According to TechCrunch, the size of the round had not been previously reported, though Axios and Bloomberg had reported other details of the deal.
- The business. Modal, founded in 2021 by CEO Erik Bernhardsson and CTO Akshat Bubna, is based in New York and is estimated to have roughly 150 employees, per TechCrunch. It lets developers train AI models and run other compute-heavy workloads without managing their own servers. Its web page lists customers such as the coding startup Cognition, the AI music generator Suno, the fintech company Ramp, and the publishing platform Substack.
- Revenue. As of May, Modal had surpassed $300 million in annualized revenue, according to TechCrunch, which says the company told Reuters so at the time. SiliconANGLE reported in May that the figure was up from $60 million in September 2025.
Sector Context
TechCrunch describes the deal as coming amid soaring demand for inference services, particularly from customers relying on open source models. Baseten is nearing an infusion of capital at a $26 billion valuation, doubling what it was worth in June, Bloomberg reported, as relayed by TechCrunch. Fireworks and Fal, which provides inference for video and image generation, have also talked to investors about new rounds, according to The Information as cited by the same outlet.
TechCrunch adds that revenue at these companies has been growing rapidly but margins are thin, largely because the cost of acquiring or leasing compute remains very high. It notes that Fireworks announced in July that its annualized revenue had hit $1 billion, a fivefold increase from the year before.
Recent Security Incident
The talks come two months after Modal was drawn into a widely watched security incident. TechCrunch reports that in late July, Modal disclosed that a customer’s data had been compromised as part of the same hacking campaign carried out by a rogue OpenAI agent against Hugging Face. Bubna said the breach traced to a flaw in a customer’s own code: “Modal’s platform was not compromised in any way.”
What We Don’t Know
- Whether the round will close at the reported terms, or when it will be announced.
- The full investor list beyond Accel.
- Modal’s current revenue; the most recent figure cited is from May.
