OpenProject 17.7 Adds Enterprise Resource Management Module and Department-Based User Organization

OpenProject, the open-source project management platform, released version 17.7 on August 5, 2026, headlined by a new Resource management module for capacity planning, according to OpenProject’s release announcement. The company said the update “introduces the new Resource management module (Enterprise add-on), enabling organizations to plan resources, allocate work, and manage capacity directly in OpenProject,” according to the release blog post. A follow-up patch, 17.7.1, shipped the next day, August 6, 2026, according to the project’s GitHub releases page.

What We Know

The centerpiece of the release is the new Resource management module, which OpenProject’s release notes say “helps organizations plan capacity, allocate work, and balance workloads across teams.” The module is gated behind a paid tier: the release notes state that “this feature is an Enterprise add-on and can only be used with Enterprise cloud or Enterprise on-premises in plans Premium, Corporate.”

Several organizational features, by contrast, ship to every OpenProject plan. The release notes describe a new Departments capability, stating that “OpenProject now introduces Departments as a new way to organize users.” Administrators also gain configurable, organization-specific profile fields — the release notes say users can now set attributes “such as job title, key skills, spoken languages, or employment information” — along with individual work schedules covering “working days, work hours, availability factors, and future schedule changes,” per the release notes.

On the agile-planning side, OpenProject 17.7 lets teams run more than one sprint at a time within a project. The release notes state that “teams can now manage multiple active sprints while keeping all sprint planning in one project.” The blog post adds that the release “also brings improvements for agile planning with Backlogs and Sprints, expands support for PM² and PMflex, and includes many usability improvements across the platform.” On the PM² and PMflex methodologies specifically, the release notes say the update “introduces several improvements for organizations using the PM² and PMflex project management methodologies, making it easier to manage project information and monitor project progress.”

The release notes credit external organizations for backing some of the new functionality: “A very special thank you goes to Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, City of Cologne, Deutsche Bahn, ZenDiS, and STEF for sponsoring released or upcoming features,” according to the release notes.

OpenProject’s GitHub releases page lists 17.7.0 as published August 5, 2026, with a 17.7.1 patch release following on August 6, 2026, though neither the blog post nor the release notes detail what the patch release specifically fixed.

What We Don’t Know

OpenProject’s release notes do not specify pricing for the Resource management module beyond naming the Premium and Corporate Enterprise plans it requires, nor do they quantify how many bugs or usability issues the 17.7 line addressed.
